Your own bed is your own space. Yes, you may share your bed with a significant other but you are still the only ones to occupy that bed. This will not be the situation whenever you check into a hotel room. You will be stepping into a room that has been used by hundreds if not thousands of other people.

Every single one of those people could have been carrying the flu or cold virus. Everyone hopes that the hotel cleaning staff is on top of their game and will make each room as germ-free as possible before they arrive. Even then, you may still want to be aware of the 4 most germ-infested zones in your hotel room. Did you remember to pack the sanitizing wipes?

Light Switches

This is one you may not think about but it is too obvious, the light switches both on lamps and on the wall. Just like a TV remote, light switches are frequently touched but rarely wiped down. They can also be touched before a person washes their hands.

Drinking Mugs and Glasses

If there are plastic cups individually wrapped in your bathroom, then that’s great. If your room has actual glasses with little paper covers, then you may want to give them an additional wash before using them. You may also have a mini coffee station along with mugs in the room. Yes, it a good idea to wash that down, as well.

TV Remote

As you would expect the TV remote is going to be covered in germs. Everyone that uses that room is going to pick up and handle that remote. Remote is not always wiped clean by the cleaning staff. Yes, the remote may be placed strategically by the bed but it will still be covered in germs.

Bed Comforters

You will always be able to count on having clean sheets after every night in a hotel room. But what about a clean bed comforter? Not so much. You will know how difficult it is to clean your own comforter at home. Imagine if you had to clean a hundred of those every day? It just is not going to happen. You may be better off to just take the comforter off and not use it at all. Call down to reception for additional blankets if you feel cold.

The points above should not put you off booking into hotel rooms. Just be aware of what you will be walking into and make a little time for cleaning. Those germs you clean up may well have been your next cold!
